Stonehenge is the most important prehistoric monument in Britain. This is because it is unique and there is nothing else like it anywhere in the world. That is why its a great mystery to Scientists and Historians because nobody can actually work out what it was used for and for what reason it was constructed . Stonehenge receives millions of visitors each year and is one of the most popular stone circles in the world.
The first phase of Stonehenge was a large circular earthwork probably used as a ceremonial meeting place about 5000 years ago.
The second phase followed, and timber settings where erected between 4900 and 4600 years ago.
And the final phase consisted of the erection of the ‘blue stones’ which where taken from the Preseli mountain in Wales, these stones had to carrys and dragged across the country side all the way to Stonehenge. After the bule stones arrived the building of the stone circle began using sarsen stones which came from the Marlborough downs. So in sequence of settigns between 4500 and 4000 years ago, Stonehenge finally took the prehistoric temple . and the ruins that we see today.
Some people believe that Stonehenge was used as an early calender by the light shining on the stones and casting a shadow on the other side which could mean for example to farm the crops or tell you when to plant them .
